The index is designed to reflect the performance of the Eurozone economy and is considered a key benchmark for the European equity market.
The Euro Stoxx 50 stock market index was launched on February 26, 1998, with a base value of 1,000 points. Its initial base date was December 31, 1991, with prices calculated retroactively back to that year. The index replaced the Dow Jones Euro Stoxx 50, which had been launched in 1991.

In 2000, the index reached a peak of 5,464.43 points, while it hit a record low of 1,738.92 points in March 2009 during the global financial crisis.
